Johnson served as the second head football coach at the Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute—now known as Grambling State University—in Grambling, Louisiana and he held that position for the 1934 season. He coached the school's basketball team from 1940 to 1942. Dr. Sanders's grandmother, Lillie Sunday-Johnson, (sister-n-law of Fidelia Adams-Johnson), was the first Miss. Grambling College, during the early 1940's. "It is evident that the legacy of academics and Education historically runs within my veins."
